Going Forward - Giving Back
Hamilton Utilities Corporation and its employees have,
for many years, recognized our responsibility to the community in
which we live and conduct business.
For example, Hamilton Utilities has brought electrical
safety seminars to more than 18,000 local elementary students over a
two-year period. We also are members of Operation PAL -an
internationally recognized crime prevention program. Several of our
employees have been recognized by this agency and others for their
roles in saving lives and preventing crime. As well, Hamilton
Utilities is a founding member of Share the Warmth, a non-profit
organization that supports utility customers who are having difficulty
paying their heating costs.
Several years ago , our employees established the
Hamilton Utilities Corporation Employees Charitable Donations Fund.
Through payroll deductions, fund-raising events and matching corporate
donations, the Charity Committee provides financial support to more
than 50 community organizations. In 2003, the Fund contributed $35,203
back into our community.
In 2003, a new Corporate Social Responsibility program
was developed. The program's focus is on educating and promote
conservation with our customers, and supporting research and
development of alternate sources of energy. Through this program,
Hamilton Utilities recently pledged $60,000 over five years to support
a research journal and a student awards program at the McMaster
Institute of Energy Studies. We also continue to sponsor McMaster
University's solar car program and Mohawk College's new program
focusing on alternative and renewable energy technologies.
Hamilton Utilities' powerWISE program was launched
in December 2003 to educate and assist our customers in conserving
energy. The first phase of the program has included the launch of a
new conservation-focused website ( www.hamiltonucorp.com), educational
seminars, online conservation advice, a conservation hotline as well
as attendance at student off-campus housing fairs and consumer shows
such as the Hamilton Halton Home Builders Association Annual Home
Show. The second phase will include Demand Side Management (DSM)
initiatives such as SMART meter pilots and new joint projects with
non-profit conservation groups, including Green Venture, Vision 2020
and Positive Power Co-op, among others.
