Hamilton Utilities Corporation
is the parent of a family of companies owned by the City of Hamilton.
It operates as the holding company for three business operations and is
responsible for the overall management, including financial, regulatory
affairs, human resources management and corporate communications.
Hamilton Utilities Corporation is the direct result
of the impending deregulation of the electrical industry by the Ontario
Government. Deregulation created an open market for electricity and allowed
municipalities to convert their former hydro Commissions into separate
business units. It also allowed Municipalities to provide additional utility-related
services.
On July 1, 2000, the five municipal electric utilities
in the former Region of Hamilton-Wentworth — Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough,
Hamilton and Stoney Creek Hydro-Electric Commissions — were amalgamated
and transformed into the new multi-service company.
Hamilton Utilities Corporation is governed by a business
Board of Directors that reports to the Corporation's sole shareholder
- the City of Hamilton. The Board operates under a standard of corporate
governance (link here to Corporate Governance) in accordance with the
Ontario Business Corporations Act and a Shareholder Declaration.
On March 1, 2005, Horizon Utilities resulted
from the merger of Hamilton Hydro Inc. and St. Catharines Utilities
Service Inc. HUC maintains 78.9% share of Horizon Utilities, the
electricity distribution company.
